Tucson Food Trucks Kick Ass

In the past food trucks were considered a last resort, a place you’d go to get food only if there were no other options (there are always options, but more on that in another blog post). They were frequently referred to as “Roach Coaches” and were considered to be a great way to get food poisoning or a nice case of the runs. That has all changed, and I’m happy to say Tucson has some amazing examples of this up-and-coming dining sensation. While at one time most people wouldn’t dream of eating food cooked in the back of a truck, food trucks are now in high demand and serving up fresh, delicious, innovative meals. Tucson is lucky enough to have several that are making some amazing food and I’m going to tell you about a few of my favorites. I hope they will become your favorites as well! #supportlocal

Serial Grillers started as a food truck serving awe-inspiring overstuffed sandwiches, towering creations packed with tasty goodness. After being featured on The Cooking Channel, The Food Network and numerous publications the Serial Grillers gang took a leap of faith and opened a brick n mortar restaurant. The expanded food truck menu includes the hot and cold sandwiches that put SG on the foodie map along with burgers, pizza, calzones, and a great assortment of craft beers. The food is fresh and original, with all their offerings lovingly named with a Serial Killer theme. This place is a must for horror-movie fans who also love good eats. The burgers have to be seen to be believed, with your choice of a ¼ lb, ½ lb or my favorite option, the insane ¾ lb Angus beef burger cooked to order. My favorite burger is the “Fallen” burger, smothered in grilled onions, jalapenos, avocado, cilantro mayo, tomatoes and melted pepper jack cheese. My favorite SG pizza is their “Natural Born Killer”, covered in habanero BBQ sauce, gooey mozzarella, provolone, and cheddar cheese, and loaded with grilled chicken, red onion, and bacon. Everything’s better with bacon, am I right? These food ninjas have plans to open another location here in Tucson soon.

Tucson Fat Noodle is another amazing Tucson food truck, who is also opening a brick n mortar restaurant soon. Their motto is “Fresh & Tasty” and their food definitely is! They make a killer ramen bowl starting with their tender house-made noodles, and load it up with honey sesame pork, shiitake mushrooms, egg, green onions, dashi, and scallions. This stuff is the real deal, ramen-loving people! My personal favorite is their ramen burger. What, you’ve never heard of a ramen burger? It’s a grilled to order burger served on a bun made from ACTUAL RAMEN NOODLES! I don’t know what kind of noodle sorcery the Fat Noodle ramen wizards have mastered but they’ve found a way to do it. Add lettuce, tomato, hoisin, and a dollop of spicy sriracha-ginger mayo and you’ve got the most unique burger experience of your life! The restaurant will feature all the food truck menu items plus a few surprises like tempura, gyoza, beer, and sake.

Another kickass food truck that is making the rounds here in the Old Pueblo is You Sly Dog, serving up the best hot dogs you’ve ever wrapped your lips around. You Sly Dog serves up 100% beef hot dogs on fluffy fresh-baked rolls. Naturally, they make the classic Chicago Dog and an amazing Sonoran Hot Dog, but the fun really starts when they get creative with some imaginative weenie creations of their own. Like the “Baloney Tony”- they take a snappy All Beef Hot Dog, wrap that bad boy up in Beef Bologna and pan-fry it. Top it off with mayo, mustard, iceberg lettuce, chopped tomato, red onion, pepperoncini, & house dressing, and this Tony is ready to go! If you like it hot, try the “El Diablo”, a spicy Hot Link Sausage smothered in fresh tomato, red onion, jalapeno salsa, ketchup, and mustard. SPOILER ALERT: This is not for the faint-of-heart, the Diablo packs some serious heat! But my favorite You Sly Dog creation is the “New Mexican”. Take an All Beef Hot Dog and load it up with grilled steak, ground beef, green chili, white onion, spicy sour cream sauce & crumbled Fritos tortilla chips. It’s a wiener winner!

Get out there and check out these unique Tucson food experiences!

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I shaved in the car the other day. I’ve seen people do it in the movies all the time. You know what I’m talking about. The tough-as-nails rogue detective running an electric razor over his 5 o'clock shadow as he drives to a meeting with... Continue →
